Strive for life The bas-relief Strive for Life overlooks the room. With its imposing scale and elevated position, it brings a feeling of protection to the space.

This piece was created by Hélène during the Umbrella movement in Hong Kong. Downtown, a massive billboard at a construction site boldly displayed the words “STRIVE FOR LIFE.” On top of the background saturated with the skyline, the Chinese characters 普通 (meaning “ordinary”) are juxtaposed with “destiny,” ironically highlighting the arbitrariness of life. These characters come alive on the wing of a toucan, an animal with a large beak, symbolizing those who strive to be heard despite imposed silences. The composition pays tribute to the 2015 protest mouvement.

The bas-relief is carved in limewood with traditional gouge techniques, then flocked, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques.

Dimensions: W 150 x H 50 x D 5 cm
